Today, let's talk about the background of When Life Gives You Tangerines, a Netflix drama that is gaining immense popularity. To do so, we can't leave out the story of Jeju dialect.
The phrase Pokssak Sogatsuda (폭싹 속았수다) is not even familiar to me, a native Korean speaker.
Although South Korea is a small country, it is divided into administrative regions like U.S. states, and each region has its own dialect. Among them, Jeju, famous as a tourist destination, has a unique culture along with a history of hardship.
Jeju dialect is particularly distinctive, making it difficult to understand even for other Koreans. However, this was more common among older generations. As more mainlanders (referred to as yukji saram by Jeju locals) settled in Jeju, the dialect has softened significantly over time.

'폭싹 속았수다'라는 말은 사실 한국인인 저에게도 익숙한 표현은 아니에요.
한국은 정말 작은 나라이지만
미국의 주처럼 행정구역이 나뉘어져 있고,
각 지역의 사투리가 존재하거든요.
그 중에서도 관광지로 유명한 '제주'는 역사적 아픔도 있지만
그들의 문화도 굉장히 독특한 지역이랍니다.
특히, 제주는 사투리가 다른 곳들보다 독보적이라서 같은 한국말이어도 못 알아듣는 단어가 많답니다.
하지만 할머니 세대, 엄마 세대에나 그렇고, 제주 사람들이 말하는 '육지사람'들이 많이 내려가서 살게 되면서 요즘에는 그런 사투리는 좀 묽어졌다고해도 무방하다고 봅니다.
저도 제주 친구가 있기는 하지만 그들끼리 떠들 때에는 못 알아듣는 단어들이 나올 때도 있지만 그래도 많이 순화 되어서 이야기하거든요.

It covers the life of the protagonist Ae-soon, from her mother's era to her own childhood and adulthood, and even her daughter Geum-myung's childhood, college years, and adult life. The Jeju of the 1960s was all about the sea and the people. It was a barren land with little infrastructure. Even in the 1970s and the 1980s, during the Seoul Olympics era, Jeju remained somewhat disconnected from the capital. My own mother, born in the 1960s, considered Jeju to be a remote honeymoon destination.
Since Jeju could only be accessed by boat or plane, it was not particularly welcoming to mainlanders. However, as tourism flourished, more outsiders moved in. In the 2000s, there was a significant boom, with Japanese and Chinese tourists purchasing land, marking a major shift in Jeju's economic landscape.
While Jeju's natural scenery may not be as pristine as before, it remains one of Korea’s most beautiful tourist destinations—albeit an expensive one. Nowadays, many Koreans say that traveling to Southeast Asia or Japan is cheaper than visiting Jeju.
Despite this, I personally love Jeju so much that I once dreamed of living there, having visited over 30 times. The sea in Jeju is just as beautiful as the waters of Hawaii. With mountains and the ocean coexisting harmoniously, Jeju is a must-visit destination.
그리고 드라마에서 나오는 시간도 굉장히 의미 있어요.

주인공인 애순이의 엄마시절부터 애순이의 어린시절과 성년, 애순이의 딸인 금명이의 어린 시절과 대학생을 지나 성인이 된 시간까지 정말 오랜 시간의 아주 많은 이야기를 담고 있지요.
1960년대의 제주라면 정말 바다와 사람.
아무것도 없었던 척박했던 제주의 모습 그대로를 보여준다고 해도 과언이 아니에요.
그러다가 1970년대를 지나 88올림픽이 있던 시대에도 제주도는 수도인 서울과 멀리 떨어져 있기도 하고, 많은 사람들의 관심을 받는 곳은 아니었어요.
1960년도에 태어난 저희 엄마도 제주도라고 하면 신혼여행으로 가는 아주 먼 곳이라는 인식이 있으셨으니까요.
배나 비행기를 타야지 갈 수 있는 척박한 곳이었어요.
육지 사람에게도 그닥 관대한 환경은 아니었고요.
관광지로 각광 받기 시작하면서 외지인들이 많이 드나들고,
2000년대에는 일본과 중국 관광객이 들어와서 토지를 사는 등 정말 많은 붐이 일어났었죠.
아름다운 풍경은 예전만은 아니지만 그래도 한국에서는 여전히 아름다운 관광지, 그러나 물가가 비싼 곳으로 여겨지고 있답니다.
현재는 제주도에 갈 여행 경비로 동남아시아나 일본 여행을 가는 게 더 저렴하다고 평가받고 있을 정도로 물가가 높습니다.
하지만 제주도를 30번도 더 다녀왔던 저는 제주도에서 사는 것을 꿈꿨을 정도로 좋아하는 곳이기도 하답니다.
하와이 바다만큼 예쁜 곳이 제주도의 바다거든요.
특히 산과 바다가 동시에 공존하고 있고, 높은 산조차도 너무 아름다운 곳이라 꼭 가보길 추천해요 :)

8화까지 이 드라마를 봐서인지 제목을 보면 2번도 맞는 것도 같지만 어쨌든 3대~4대까지 어우르는 정말 길고 긴 성장 드라마 느낌이니까요.
그 시절 그렇게 열심히 살았던, 억척스러웠던 그들의 이야기가 담겨져 있습니다.
